NUTRITION CONSULTATION
Getting Started
Taking the first step towards better health is always the hardest part, whether it’s a healthy eating plan or starting a new exercise regime. Your initial contact with Sarah Kirby Nutrition offers you the chance to discuss your health issues or concerns, what you would like to achieve, and as to if nutritional therapy is right for you. It also offers a chance for us to get to know each other and book your initial consultation.
Prior to your initial consultation you will be sent an in-depth health questionnaire and food diary. You will be asked to fill these in and return them before your consultation. Both are detailed, this enables me to build up a bigger and better picture of your health before we meet and allows more time to discuss your health issues, aims and expectations face to face.
Initial Consultation
During your initial consultation we’ll go through your questionnaire and food diary, this will give us a chance to discuss your health concerns in detail and to clarify any points raised. I will explain what dietary, nutritional and lifestyle factors I believe to be affecting your health, and working together we can set some realistic, attainable goals to help improve your symptoms.
Your treatment plan will take into account any personal and lifestyle factors that may be a challenge on your road to wellness. I may also recommend dietary supplements or laboratory health tests where necessary.
At the end of your consultation you will receive:
• A detailed treatment plan, inc. dietary advice on foods to eliminate or introduce, lifestyle and exercise advice if necessary, meal ideas.
• Fact sheets containing supporting information about your health condition.
• A comprehensive supplement plan if necessary, detailing what to take and why.
• A recommendation of laboratory health tests where necessary.
NB: Please note that dietary supplements and health tests are purchased separately and are not included in the price of an initial consultation.
A telephone call and email support of up to 15 minutes in total are available between appointments and are included in the price of the initial consultation.
Follow-ups
These are recommended to monitor the progress you have made after implementing any changes, to help keep motivation going and to discuss any further symptoms that may have arisen. A follow-up consultation would usually take place between 4 and 8 weeks after your initial one.
Follow-ups also give us the chance to discuss the results of any health tests you may have had done (either privately or from your GP) and to take your treatment plan to the next level, all the while taking into account what is realistic and achievable.
A telephone call and email support of up to 15 minutes in total are available between appointments and are included in the price of the follow-up consultation. Further follow-up appointments will be advised depending on what you would like to achieve, your health condition, to help motivation, and to assess any further changes that may need making to your programme. |

HEALTH TESTS
The cause of many health symptoms can sometimes be unclear and may have persisted for years with several unsuccessful visits to the doctor, often with the sufferer’s symptoms being dismissed as “all in the mind”. In many cases the only certain way to diagnose or confirm a specific condition is to use laboratory testing. Once the cause has been diagnosed, an appropriate treatment programme can be developed.
What are the Benefits of Testing?
• Obtaining quick and accurate results – which may save time and money.
• Helping motivation with a treatment plan if evidence of an imbalance can be proved.
• Achieving a state of wellbeing quickly.
•; The treatment plan will be even more closely tailored to your requirements.
How is it different from tests performed by your GP?
Many different kinds of testing are used, these include:
• Stool.
• Urine.
• Blood – finger prick and blood draw.
• Hair mineral.
Tests can be used in a number of ways:
• Screening for specific health conditions.
• To identify nutrient deficiencies.
• To identify food intolerance’s.
• To highlight biochemical markers that assess disease risk – early detection can mean prevention of illness in later life.
Most of the tests can be performed in the comfort of your own home with the exception of a blood draw, which must be carried out by a qualified phlebotomist.
All of the tests come with:
• Simple, clear instructions on how and when to carry out the test.
• Turnaround times.
• Best posting dates.
Sarah Kirby Nutrition has access to some of the leading diagnostic laboratories in the UK. A fully detailed report is returned to me and you also get a copy to keep for yourself. |

WHO/WHAT CAN NUTRITION HELP?
What is Naturopathic Nutrition?
Naturopathic nutrition is a complete system of natural healthcare that looks at healing the person as a whole being, looking at and getting to the root cause of the problem rather than just treating the symptoms independently. It emphasises the use of natural, whole and organic foods as medicine, along with lifestyle recommendations and dietary supplements where necessary.
Modern day life puts many stresses and strains on the body. Busy working and personal lives, an increase in chemical, environmental and electro-magnetic pollutants, and food that is substantially less nutrient rich than 50 years ago all combine to give a heady mix of health problems waiting to happen.
One of the main roles of a nutritional therapist is as an educator and motivator. We can give you the tools and guidance to vibrant health and vitality, empowering you to make the necessary changes.
When is Nutritional Therapy beneficial?
There are times when our nutritional requirements are higher, for example on diagnosis of a specific health condition, after illness, during periods of prolonged stress, in puberty and around pregnancy.
Nutritional therapy aims to identify the underlying causes of your health concerns, providing long-term relief. Some of the areas where nutritional therapy can be of benefit are:
• Nervous system – Headaches, migraines, stress, anxiety.
• Food intolerance’s/allergies.
• Hormonal issues – PMS, menopause, PCOS, thyroid disorders.
• Skin health – Eczema, psoriasis, acne.
• Digestive problems – IBS, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, flatulence.
• Musculo-skeletal health – Arthritis, osteoporosis, gout, fibromyalgia.
• Weight management – Blood sugar problems, food cravings, anorexia.
• Mental health – Depression, insomnia.
• Energy – Low energy, ME, chronic fatigue.
• Immunity – Frequent colds/viruses.
• Heart health – High blood pressure, high cholesterol.
• Respiratory health – Asthma, bronchitis.
• Sports nutrition.
• Maintaining a healthy diet!
There are of course many other areas where nutritional therapy can be of help, so please give me a call even if your own particular concerns are not covered in the above list.
I believe that good wholesome nutrition is the foundation of vibrant health and vitality. Even minor changes can produce dramatic effects, and we will work together at a pace that feels comfortable for you. |

ABOUT SARAH
Ever since a young age I’ve had a passion for food; being taken out for meals by my parents, being taught to cook by my mum and wanting to run my own restaurant when I got older.
I left school to go to catering college and following that worked in the hotel industry. After about ten years I felt there was something missing in my career and looked to the complementary healthcare profession to do something more rewarding.
In 2002 I re-trained as a massage therapist, which had a profound effect on my life. I started taking better care of myself through exercise and receiving treatments, and in 2005 I visited a nutritional therapist to seek help for some digestive issues I had. Within just a few months, after making simple dietary changes and taking a few supplements, I was amazed at the difference in my wellbeing, new-found energy levels and vibrant health.
The experience led me to maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise; including running, yoga, mountain biking, pilates and swimming.
It was at this point I decided to study nutrition.
I could see how much this knowledge would benefit some of my massage clients and how well it would complement my existing practice, making it even more holistic. In July 2010, after three years of study, I received diplomas in naturopathy and naturopathic nutrition from The College of Naturopathic Medicine.
I work in a holistic manner looking at all areas of your diet, lifestyle, physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing to see how this is impacting upon your health.
I am a member of the British Association for Applied Nutrition & Nutritional Therapy (BANT), I’m fully insured, and am committed to ongoing study of current research and industry developments through Continued Professional Development (CPD). |

LaStone Therapy
Developed from Native American stone medicine and teachings, LaStone therapy is a unique treatment combining massage, healing work and spirituality. During a LaStone Therapy treatment warmed basalt and cooled marble stones are used to massage the body. It is this use of alternating temperature on the body that increases blood and lymph circulation, increases metabolism, reduces muscle tension and inflammation and relieves anxiety and stress.
The deep effects of a LaStone Therapy massage are gentle and can be pleasantly felt throughout the body for many days after a treatment. The use of cold stones for injuries - as well as alternating hot and cold stones for tissue repair and stress reduction - gently facilitates the easy release of body tension during a soothing manipulation. This in turn promotes natural healing and a treatment may provide sustained relief from many chronic and/or acute problems.
Experience a profoundly relaxing beneficial massage that will regenerate and revitalise the whole body while taking the mind to a deep meditative state.
Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy helps to relieve stress and related conditions. Essential oils are chosen to suit your needs. Physically they have an affinity with certain systems of the body helping to alleviate respiratory, digestive or hormonal problems, to name but a few. Emotionally they can help to reduce feelings of anxiety, grief and emotional trauma, and bring about a sense of relaxation, balance and harmony.
Swedish Massage
Swedish massage, also known as classic massage, is a good starting point for someone who has never had a treatment before. It is made up of long gliding strokes, kneading, friction, stretching and tapping, and helps promote relaxation, ease muscle tensions and increase circulation. It can be slow and gentle or vigorous and bracing, and light to firm in pressure, all of which is tailored to suit your needs.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage is a type of massage aimed at re-aligning the deeper structures of the muscle fibres and fascia. It uses many of the same movements and techniques as Swedish but with a firmer, deeper pressure. It helps to release physical and emotional tension that may have been stored in the body for years. It is a more focused type of massage, working on releasing chronic muscle tension or “knots” (also known as adhesions). It is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, lower back tightness and sore shoulders.
Indian Head Massage
This is a stimulating and rejuvenating yet deeply relaxing technique working on the upper back, neck, shoulders, face and scalp. It improves blood circulation and lymphatic flow, promotes clear thinking and aids in the elimination of accumulated toxins. It is especially good for relieving stress, tension, fatigue, insomnia and headaches. It is performed with the client sitting in a chair, and can be done with or without oil to suit, although the use of oil will nourish both the skin and the hair.
